Professional Biography
Dr. Jarnecke has been a Clinical Psychologist for over 25 years.He has been providing psychological services in Fredericksburg since 1982.Prior to that time, he worked in Community Mental Health Centers in Indiana and in Virginia. He served as the Coordinator of Adolescent Inpatient Services at the Regional Mental Health Center in Kokomo, Indiana and, later, as the Regional Coordinator of the Counseling Center in Warsaw, Virginia.
In his practice at Behavioral Healthcare of Fredericksburg, he provides psychotherapy for children, adolescents and adults. He also offers a full range of psychological testing services, for issues such as ADHD,adjustment problems, Learning problems and custody issues. He provides psychological services to individuals with chronic pain, brain injuries and other physical issues that are accompanied by psychological distress.
Dr. Jarnecke has been trained at the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy in Charlottesville in Forensic evaluation. He has provided evaluations of Competency to Stand Trial (CST), Mental Status at the Time of the Offense (MSO) and Juvenile Competency to Stand Trial in courts throughout the 15th Judicial District. He has testified in over 100 different cases involving Custody issues, MSO, CST or Personal Injury concerns.
He is a member of the affiliate staff of Mary Washington Hospital,currently serving as the Chair of the Division of Clinical Psychology. He also has consulting privileges at Snowden of Fredericksburg, where he served on the Planning Committee for Child and Adolescent Services when the building and program were being designed.
Dr. Jarnecke has been awarded the Faulkner Award by Rappahannock Big Brothers-Big Sisters for his volunteer activities as a psychological consultant over a period of 15 years. He was awarded the Mental Health Association in Fredericksburg's Community Service Award for 2002.
He is an adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Psychology Department at the University of Mary Washington, where he teaches courses in Clinical Psychology, Applied Counseling, Personality and Psychological Stresses of Divorce. He has published in professional journals in the areas of Clinical Judgment and Assessment, in addition to publications dealing with Human Development.
He has served on the Board of the Fredericksburg Counseling Service, Serenity Home and was a founding Board member of the Rappahannock Mediation Center, for whom he was also a Trainer. In the past, he has written an advice column for teenagers and coached youth soccer for 22 seasons. He is also a member of the Behavioral Health Task Force, a community group studying barriers to obtaining mental health services. Recently, he was appointed to membership on the Mental Health Steering Committee, formed to devise a strategy to increase community accessibility to Mental Health services..
He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society of Clinical Psychology, the American Psychology-Law Society, the Virginia Psychological Association and the Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychology. Dr Jarnecke is listed in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and also in Who's Who in America.
